I bought a RICOH WG-M1 waterproof action camera and have been taking videos of my riding when touring. I sometimes post the videos on my blog, but basically I just play them on the TV instead of BGV.
I was originally looking for...
- I can shoot 1080p/60fps.
- It supports time-lapse photography.
- It's also capable of taking loop shots that can be used as a drive-recorder.
- I can take pictures while using a USB power supply.
- It can be fixed to a universal tripod hole.
- You can use an external microphone.
- It's waterproof to some extent.
- It has an image stabilizer.
That's what I'm looking for. The candidates are Sony's HDR-AS200V or GoPro HERO4. ...... Both of them are expensive. ..... I'm not sure if it's a good idea to buy one or not.
Well, the Go Pro doesn't have image stabilization.
And then one day. I was curious about the WG-M1, whose price had dropped significantly with the introduction of the new model, when I saw an article posted by Mr. Weishui Shi, a frequent blogger (debut of motorcycle videos), and I was convinced that it would be enough.
Except for the fact that it doesn't have an external mic input and it's 1080p/30fps, it fits my requirements perfectly, and 16,000 yen (at the time of purchase) is very cheap. And 16,000 yen (at the time of purchase) is very cheap. Most cameras in the same price range don't have image stabilization.
So now I'm using this as a handlebar mount.
I was very happy with this, but there was one thing that bothered me about the angle.
If you look through a screen, the scenery will inevitably look blurry.
Recently, some insects have been killed by hitting the screen while driving at high speed, causing the screen to lose its transparency by the time you reach your destination. It's easy to see in this image. Since we crossed the Aqua-line and drove along the sea, the sea breeze might have had an effect.
Obviously, the image without the screen is beautiful. By the way, I wiped the screen lightly with Plexus before leaving the house.
I know I can get a good angle if I position it backwards with a tank mount. I have proven this with a cheap Chinese suction cup.
The camera is a little upturned because it is a test shot and was installed properly, but this is closer to the ideal shape even considering the distortion caused by the wide angle. This way is more ideal, considering the distortion caused by the wide angle.
However, as I mentioned in the article, the suction cup came off in no time at all. Aside from the quality issue of the Chinese product, I also think that the Ninja 400's gas tank is not suitable for the suction cup due to its subtle curved surface.
I have a feeling that it will be dangerous if the action cam falls off on the highway........
I wonder if it would be possible to offset the handlebar mounts by adding some kind of bar to the back of the handlebar mounts. ..... I was wondering if it would be possible to offset the handlebar mount by attaching a bar to the back of it. ......... I found one that looks good.
One of the comments in the customer reviews is that "it was able to be installed on a Ninja 400 2014SE.

I snapped it up as soon as I could. I'll install it when it arrives and write the rest of the story.

It arrived. It was shipped the same day I ordered it. I haven't had time to install it yet, but here it is.
There is no point in saying that there is no instruction manual for this kind of product or that the number of screws and washers do not match.
Oh, and the "hair" on the microphone cover is from the cat.
I have a feeling that the material will rust and the fueling port (and tank if I'm not careful) will get scratched up. I think it would be better to put a thin rubber sheet or something on the contact surface.
The mounting position and angle seem to be as intended, so I'll take some test shots after I've taken measures to protect the oil supply port.

Hmm? If I put it in this direction, it won't open the gas tank, will it?
