The weekend has been full of typhoons and rain, so I haven't been able to do the bike maintenance I've been meaning to do.... Finally, it was a beautiful Saturday. So I thought I'd clean the drive sprocket and chain, change the coolant (which I can't do without removing the cowl), wash the underside of the bike, and polish the exhaust pipe. First things first. I took a walk to three convenience stores and a drug store, and then went to the local supermarket.... I was going to use an oil treatment box to deal with the waste coolant, but I didn't have any oil treatment boxes in stock at home that I thought I still had....
So I thought of using diapers as a substitute, but I couldn't find anything that sold several diapers anywhere.... So this time I decided to use toilet paper instead. I tore up a roll of toilet paper and threw it into a convenience store bag, just like the wrestlers I used to see on TV tearing up phone books with their bare hands. I used three rolls, but with the amount of coolant in the Ninja 650, I think two rolls would have been enough.
Strip the cowl.
Now, let's remove the cowl. The cowl is held in place with four screws and seven quick rivets, but it is rather easy to remove. This time, I removed only the right side. I brought my cardboard toolbox and used my own tools, but I'm pretty sure that the on-board tools alone will do the job.
I thought I'd clean the engine area as well, but it was a full cowl car. I didn't find any dirt that I was worried about. I might polish the exhaust pipe later... That's about it. Just a quick dusting with water and you're done.
Poorly done coolant change
Now for the coolant change. The other dayI got it at my local Rough & Load.I have WAKO'S long life coolant, so basically all I have to do is drain and fill... But I'm not sure where the drain bolt is. I had no choice but to look at the service manual for the Ninja 650 that I had saved on my blog to see where it was located....
I found the location of the drain bolt, so I loosened it a bit with a tool first.... Once you have the characteristic toilet paper bag on hand, you can start the coolant change... But....
After refilling from the radiator side, fill the reservoir tank with coolant up to the FULL line to complete the job. By the way, the washer for the coolant drain bolt isCreate a jaw mount for the camera. The washer with an inner diameter of 5.1mm that I used when I did the installation was just the right size, so I replaced it.
Skipped the rest of the work and prepared for tomorrow.
Now, we continue with the work. If you look closely, you can see some rust on the rear disc.... But even though it's the end of November, there are still mosquitoes in the parking lot... My motivation dropped the moment I realized that there were several mosquitoes flying around me and that I was bitten in one place. After almost removing one bolt from the drive sprocket cover, I made the soft decision to call it a day. Well, the rust on the discs will probably come off after a few times of braking. The chain and drive sprocket won't take that long, so I'll do them next time.... I checked the tires and found that the slip sign was only a few millimeters away. I'll have to change my tires this winter. I put the cowl back on and finished the maintenance. After that, I lazed around at home and then went out in the evening... I went to this place.... I rented a motorcycle. I'm going out tomorrow.
